SCALING & POLISHING

Scaling by your dentist or dental hygienist removes calculus from both above (supragingival calculus) and below (subgingival calculus) the gumline. Hand instruments of different sizes and shapes may be used, or a water-cooled ultrasonic scaler with a rapidly vibrating tip. The teeth are then polished with a slightly abrasive paste on a rotating brush or rubber cup to remove any stain and remaining plaque.

TOOTH COLOURED FILLINGS
Composite or 'white' fillings are composed of a plastic resin and an inert filler. A range of shades is available so that the colour of your teeth can be matched very closely, to the point where the restorations are hardly visible. Recent technological advances mean that composite materials can now also be used in posterior (back) teeth because they are capable of withstanding considerable biting forces.

LASER CARIES DETECTION
The laser helps detect caries at the earliest possible stage so the most appropriate treatment plans can be designed for patients. Measurements from the laser will help determine whether to monitor suspect areas over time and treat them with preventive therapy, or to restore them with minimally invasive techniques. it is now possible with our laser to quantify the various stages of decay more accurately and without exposing patients to radiation

CHILDERN'S DENTISTRY
Every year thousands of children ages 1-4 suffer from extensive tooth decay. The major culprits are sugar containing liquids found in the baby's bottle - especially during the night.

Just like an adult's mouth, a baby's mouth contains bacteria. These bacteria feed on sugars found in the liquids we drink and in the foods we eat. Bacteria feed on this sugar creating acid as a by-product. It is this acid which attacks the tooth enamel and causes cavities.

BLEACHING OF TEETH
A patient's gums and lips are first protected and then a potent bleaching agent is applied to their teeth, which is left on for some minutes before being washed off. The effects of this type of bleaching are immediate. It might, however, take several appointments before the desired level of whitening is achieved.
